Green Your Dog?

doggie-pooper-scooper

In one simple step.

And we’re talking the poop scooping (which is most definitely not a modern country dance!). Now, we’re not saying to those of you lucky enough to have a garden and therefore a compost heap that you should put the poop on the pile, most especially if that pile is going to be used on plants growing for humans to eat. There are too many bacteria and the like in dog poop that makes it unhealthy to put on that compost.

But some clever people have come up with some special pet poop composters, which turn pet poop and coffee grounds and other scraps into special compost for your flowers. Perfect! One such company, NatureMill, may be just the people you’re looking for. Click here for more information.

Other than that, we say use your old grocery bags for picking up the poop. And if you get into using reusable totes for all your shopping needs, and you no longer have plastic shopping bags, we do suggest the recycled and biodegradable poop scoopin’ bags to make you feel good about helping your carbon footprint shrink.

Greening Your Cat – Litter Box

hey, a little privacy here, people!

The great thing about cats is they already help the environment out by not constantly using water to bathe in since they rather cleverly have their own bathing system built in.

But like all of us, cats could do with a little more of green in their lives.

In our household when it comes to litter, choice is very important. We use natural litter and there are many green options, from recycled pine chips used in Feline Pine, to corn used in World’s Best Cat Litter to recycled newspapers in Good Mews.

Why go green with litter? Well, these new, natural litters are biodegradable which helps reduce landfills, and the traditional clumping clay litter uses bentonite, a product that’s strip-mined, something that is bad for our environment.

So the next time you’re out choosing litter, why not have a look at some of the alternative choices?

An Easy Start To Greening Your Pet

I'm not sure this is what they mean by 'greening' us...silly humans.

These days we all try and make our lives as green as possible so we can help the planet stay a place where we all can live (and by all I mean everything, not just people).

Reducing our carbon footprints can be sometimes as simple as switching our main mode of transportation to public or bicycle or as complicated as making sure all our clothing is from renewable and sustainable sources.

For those of us with pets, we need to start including our pets in our daily green routine and decision making.

It’s easy to do, especially if you take baby steps.

The simplest way to begin is the next time you’re buying pet supplements for your dog or cat, read the labels. Make sure the product is organic or natural and if appropriate, from a renewable source.

Luxury is all well and good, but natural, organic and responsible sources give you luxury and superior quality often without an inflated price tag. And your pet will feel and look better for it and you can feel good you’re doing your bit to help our battered planet.
