It’s Officially spring, but…

nbsnow_t300

It’s officially spring, but there’s still snow and slush and mud on the ground.

When it’s doggy walking time, this can certainly make a mess of both your dog – and your house. If you’ve got the kind of pup that likes a good roll around on the ground, no matter what the conditions, you’re going to end up with one dirty dog.

While bathing every day might seem like a dream-solution in times like this, it ain’t gonna happen. A better solution is more regular baths and daily wipe downs with doggy wipes.

Doggy wipes have the advantage of being quick and easy and they keep your pooch clean between baths. And they also help moisturise paws and skin.

It’s Snowing; look after your pet

dogs20__1231361208_5152

Winter has reared its head once more with a snow storm here in New York. If we’re getting snow, we know other parts of the country are also suffering from last minute winter woes.

With heavy snow it’s a good idea to keep outdoor pets indoors – no one wants their pet disappearing in a pile of snow.

Walks? When the snow is thick on the ground and steadily piling up, even the most snow-loving dog isn’t going to do well. So use your noggin (that’s your head) and get some puppy pads or the special fake grass called PottyPatch for your dog to use as an alternative to outdoors.

Exercise woes for your pet are no fun, but be creative. If you live in an apartment building, why not strap on the leash and take your dog for a walk through the halls, or even better up and down a few flights of stairs (we suggest doing this after he’s gone to the bathroom, just in case). Playing games with your dog in the house or apartment work, too.

And in cold weather, cats love to sleep on top of motors, under the hood of cars, so please, before you drive off into the day (or the night as the case may be), we suggest checking under the hood for any sleeping kitties.

So keep warm, keep your pets warm and dry and if you live in a warm state, can we come visit?

With the coming change of season…

adorable_Puppy_by_KPPhoto

I’m sure those of us living in the colder states are ready to breathe a sigh of relief.

But with any change of season comes changes in humidity and as most of us know, it results in dry or itchy skin as our body adjusts. While we will change our moisturisers to deal with the new season, we need to think about our dogs.

Dogs are also susceptible to the skin irritations that come with season change.

But there is something you can do to help out your pooch. Dog nutritional and vitamin supplements not only help the general health of your pet, but they also help give him a shiny coat and moisturised skin.

Try some that contain borage oil or salmon oil.

Dog shampoo, specifically designed for pooches,  will not only  make your  dog feel like a luxurious creature, but will help his coat and skin remain itch-free and supple during the change in weather (and all year round!), which is what we want.

So do your dog a favour, and check out some great products here!

Walking your dog at night

BayPinesNightDogWalking

Regardless of whether it’s simply the time of year, or it’s always dark when you get home from work, or your dog just has gotta go, sometimes walking your dog at night is unavoidable.

Like with anything, there are certain risks with walking your dog at night, but two simple tips can make that walk far safer.

Commonsense. Yes, commonsense. You have a brain, use it. If you’re near a park, go there, or stick to well-lit streets. Because visibility is limited, make sure you cross when you have the lights, and don’t walk along the side of the road. And always keep an eye out for cars.

Bright clothes. For you and your dog. Make sure you can be seen, and just as importantly, make sure your dog can be seen. There are many reflective coats available, not to mention collars that light up.

So use your noggin and make sure you’re visible and you’ll have many safe nighttime walks to come.

winter bathing tips

dog

With the cold weather completely upon us, one task remains unchanged: we still need to bathe our pets from time to time.

However winter does bring with it its own issues, and we need to take that into account when not only selecting the right shampoo and conditioner, but how we set about not only washing our dogs, but drying them, too.

Firstly, we recommend a high quality shampoo and conditioner, made specifically for dogs. Choose an organic luxury  shampoo and conditioner for your dog, one that preferably contains ingredients like coconut oil, borage oil or shea butter. The winter weather is harsh and very drying on all our skin, human and pet alike.

Secondly, make sure the house is warm when you bathe your pet. If you live in one of those city apartments where the heat comes on twice daily, do it when the place is warm, not resembling the Arctic tundra. And make sure your dog is completely dry before you expose him to the elements or even the cold. When wet your pet is essentially without his protective fur layer.

And thirdly, always, always reward your pet for being so good during the grooming.

Dogsitting: brief how-to

200355950-001

As a dog owner, there always comes a time when you can’t travel with your beloved bundles of fur.

Perhaps you’re travelling overseas or simply heading somewhere where dog’s aren’t allowed. You know you have a couple of options. You can either leave your dog with a kennel or you can get a dog sitter.

Both are fine options, but sometimes we wish to opt for a sitter. It feels moe intimate, hands on and, let’s face it, it’s in your home so your pets don’t feel too much of an upheaval.

We have some tips to ease your mind and make your time apart from your four-legged kids. Read on.

Lists. Seriously, while you may feel incredibly anal and nitpicky by leaving the ultimate list of how to look after your dog and what to feed, give as treats and how long to walk, play and what time to feed, you can. It’s your dog. The more someone knows your wishes, the easier it is for them to carry them out. Just write them out in a friendly, detailed and concise way. You’ll be glad you did.

Treats. Healthy, natural and organic gourmet treats for dogs are an important part of you being gone. You know your pet will need a little pampering and dogs are like guys. Feed them something yummy and comforting and they’re halfway to being placated. So leave some of your pet’s very favourite treats (healthy but delicious ones), with instructions of how many is okay to give on a daily basis and you’ll be sleeping a little easier while you’re away.

Emergency Numbers. We never want to think about it, but emergency numbers for vets, neighbours, even you are important to leave, just in case. And if you have spare keys with a good friend, family member or neighbour, then you’ll be able to feel good, knowing that even if there’s a mix-up, your dog will still get fed and have time with a person every day while you’re away.

These are just a few tips to help make not only your trip easier, but your dog’s time away from you easier, too.

Just know that the person who knows your dog best is you, and you’re the only person who can find the right sitter. Trust instincts, research references and spend time with the sitter and your dog. And if your dog has special needs or wants then make sure you articulate so they are met.

And, of course have fun. Because the best part of any trip is being able to come back and see your beloved pet!

Pet Lover’s Gift Ideas

All those gifts better be for me!

With Christmas a mere few days away, it’s time for that last minute shopping spree – to get all the gifts you haven’t had time to get yet. And sometimes it’s hard to pick the right gift for someone – especially those people who you can’t quite zero in on the perfect gift for them.

Don’t panic.

We’ve put together a quick list of gift ideas for the pet lovers in your life. And we’ve broken it down into categories, too.

Bookworms – They always have a book on them, or they have tons of books lying about their place…the bookworm  is easy to spot. The great thing about books is they make the perfect gift for people of all ages. Animal books abound, whether fact or fiction, there’s something animal oriented out there for the pet loving reader in your life. We love classics like “All Creatures Great & Small” by James Herriot, children’s favorites like “Fantastic Mr Fox” by Roald Dahl, informative reads like “It’s a Dog’s Life…but It’s Your Carpet” by Justine A. Lee DVM, and good old mystery romps like “The Cat Who Could Read Backwards” by Lilian Jackson Braun.

Movie Buffs – A DVD is always a delightful gift. The beautiful thing is if you’re not sure what movie is right, then an animal film is the perfect fit for the animal lover in your life.  Movies make great stocking stuffers or a great cheap gift for those of us on a tight budget. Films we love are “Milo & Otis”, “Gorillas in the Mist”, “The Aristocats”, “My Friend Flicka”, “Madagascar”, “Finding Nemo”, “March of the Penguins”, “Babe”, “Lady & the Tramp”,  and  “Marley & Me”.

Athlete – Owns a dog? A fancy new leash with which to take the dog on runs with is always the perfect gift. And leashes can be cheap or expensive. There are ones with bling, ones that are quirky, bright ones and even elegant ones. Apart from leashes, you can also get matching dog and owner t-shirts for the daily dog run, or even a cool collapsible  water dish for Fido to use at the end of the run.

Pampered Pet – If the pet owner has a pampered pet then the perfect gift is one for the animal. All kinds of options abound. Fancy snacks of organic dried meats, or tasty morsels made by small, artisan companies are a fantastic gift for pampered pets. These snacks are often a bit pricey for people to buy their pet on a regular basis, but cheap enough you won’t break your budget. But anything goes, from fancy cat toys and motorized laser toys, to beds, blankets and carry cases, we say all you need to do is let your imagination, and your budget, be your guide.

Healthy Pet - Pampered and well looked after, these pets look good on the inside and the outside. new, elegant grooming tools are always a handy thing to have on hand, and most of us don’t upgrade as often as we should. Other ideas for gifts are healthy treats, the kind designed to taste good and help make the pet healthier. Supplements like organic wild salmon oil are also a great idea. And with dogs, some high quality organic luxury pet shampoo and conditioner is always a welcome gift.

Happy last minute shopping.

Holiday Tip

surprise!
With the holidays coming up we all want to get our loved ones the perfect gift…and sometimes that means making an error of judgement.

Pets are fantastic, but if you’re thinking about giving a loved one a pet as a holiday gift, we urge you to think long and hard about it.

Pets are not frivolous gifts and it’s in the months after the holidays that shelters become inundated with unwanted pets. Kittens and puppies are adorable but they’re also a big commitment. We’re talking years.

So unless it’s something that’s been discussed seriously or you’re in the position to look after the pet come worse case scenario, we say, choose a different kind of gift.

Happy Holidays!

What Not To Feed Your Cat

good for people. bad for felines.

This might seem like a strange thing to say, since as a cat owner, you feed your cat the best food, and sometimes the best little treats, straight from your table to theirs.

In actuality this is not the best idea, since there are foods out there we eat every day but are harmful to cats.  This is because cats are what’s called ‘obligate carnivores’. This means, unlike you, they don’t need to eat their veggies. Their physiology developed to a meat only diet, and the only veg they get naturally in the wild is from the guts of their prey and the occasional grass nibbling session.

So cats don’t have the right enzymes to break down certain substances found in many different veggies (and even fish) that other animals can, and therefore many of these things are toxic to cats.

Here is a small list:

onions & garlic & their family -Onions, garlics, leeks, shallots, etc, all contain a substance called disulphides, which breaks down red blood cells. This is not good for cats or vampires (or any cat vampires out there). Even small amounts of onion fed to a cat in food over a long period of time can cause much damage. So beware feeding your cat any prepared foods or leftovers that may contain garlic or onion. Always read labels on processed and prepared foods. Even better is to stick to real cat food.

avocado -You might find avocado a delicious treat, and it’s very rich in vitamin E. But avocado also contains a toxin called persin, which can be deadly to cats.

milk & cheese -The lactic acid can cause diarrhea and upset kitty tummies. It’s a myth cats need to eat milk. They don’t. Water is what they need.

alcohol -Alcohol needs to be processed through the liver. Cats livers don’t function the way ours do and thus are less able to process toxins. A very small amount is very bad for cats.

chocolate – Never feed your cat even a teeny bit of chocolate. It contains theobromine, a heart stimulant, that’s deadly to cats. Even a small bit can cause confusion and intoxication and damage. Besides, cats can’t taste sweet things and they have no need of it. Keep the chocolate to yourself. It won’t really be that hard…

raw potato -A part of the deadly nightshade family, raw potato contains toxins that are harmful to humans as well as cats. Cooking breaks those toxins down. A little cooked potato is fine for kitty and for you.

To get a complete list of harmful foods to cats, we suggest speak to your local vet.

Getting The Right Supplements In A Fussy Dog

I have that doggone doggy glow!

While the idea of wrapping supplements in bacon might be wildly appealing to any dog, but most especially a fuss-pot, I really doubt your vet would approve.

Improving your dog’s diet not only does wonders for his health, but his coat and all over level of energy.

But what to do if your dog is so fiercely devoted to his mass-produced, not so good-for-him (but oh-so tasty) brand that starvation is preferable to any change in diet, no matter how small? If you’ve tried every trick in the book, to hiding the healthier food under his usual fare to treats, and the slow transference of brands, you’ll understand the frustrations of trying to get your dog the nutrients and minerals he needs to not just be healthy, but to glow. And while using ultra-high quality luxury and organic specialty shampoos, and other pet grooming supplies can make a dog shine like the most glamorous of red-carpet starlets, that’s not how you make your dog glow here.

Here I’m talking about making him glow from the inside. Shampoos can come in after you’ve fixed the problem. The question is…how.

It’s like dealing with fussy kids. Some will only eat square white food and nothing and no one will get them to think otherwise. And woe-betide a parent wielding broccoli…

Basically you need to treat your dog like you would that child. Sometimes strong arming and even the most ultra-sneaky methods don’t work (there’s no hiding the piece of broccoli. But a smart move like a sauce, soup or stew that’s secretly infused with that broccoli works, as do vitamin supplements. And like those parents, you always need to keep trying to expand your dog’s food list.

One way is to keep it on the table. Perhaps small morsels of a new quality wet food or kibble. When he begs, be reluctant, pretend to eat it, then let him have some. Just like a kid, dogs what what they think they can’t have, so this is one great way to try and change the diet. And of course, keep up the old mixing it in with the old food, bit by bit by bit.

But until that happens, if it happens (and let’s face it, some of us are always going to be fuss-pots), mixing in a natural supplement like wild Alaskan salmon oil (chock full of those much needed omega-3 and -6 fatty acids) and healthy coat supplements that contain the much touted borage oil.

And luckily there are top quality, natural pet supplements that come in the form of delicious, chewable treats. Multivitamins, hip and joint health and liver health. All the things that will make a fussy dog glow with health and vitality.

For the discerning pet owner, all these items are found anywhere that luxury and organic pet supplies for dogs are sold, and best of all, you can find those places online, too, a boon for anyone who lives in the country or a tiny town.
