Cats & Mice

toy mouse attack!!!

Cats are great hunters. Anyone who has ever owned a cat (or been owned by a cat, if truth be told) can tell you this. We’ve all been on the receiving end of a grizzly present in the form of a dead bird, or in particular, a dead mouse.

And they love to sometimes chomp down on that mouse, making your special gift even more grizzly.

But did you know that researchers once tried to develop a mouse-flavoured cat food? If you think about it, it makes sense, since farm cats often live off mice (while keeping any infestation at bay), and in the wild, a cat would be eating her dinner of rodents and birds.

Unfortunately mouse-flavoured cat food never took off, as all they cats they tested it on refused to eat it.

Cats, it seems, are only interested in hunting down mice  to hone their skills (and give you presents),  or chasing after the cat nip filled ones.

Oh, Fluffy, we can see you have standards! Only fish, beef and chicken for  you!

…about the Keeshond.

Did you know the Keeshond is a very old breed of dog? In fact, they’ve always been used as watchdogs, and as a companion for humans.

Luckily, even though they are still great watchdogs today and will let you know when strangers come to your home, they’re not a yappy dog, nor are they attack dogs.

They’re affectionate, and usually of a happy disposition.

We say, what a great dog!

Did You Know???

The Lundehund dog is a rare breed from Norway? It is, indeed. This adorable Norwegian hunting dog’s name literally means Puffin Dog, because they were bred and used to hunt puffins, which the Norwegians prized for the meat and the feathers.

However, the Lundehund suddenly found itself unemployed in the 1800s when puffins became a protected species.

Their numbers dwindled since they were not deemed useful. Lucky for dog aficionados out there they were saved from the very brink of extinction in the 1940s by two heroic Norwegians.

This is a good thing, especially since the dog isn’t just a pretty face with some specialised (if obsolete) hunting skills. Not only do they have 6 toes on each paw, but they can also close their ears!

Can you do that?
