It’s Snowing; look after your pet

dogs20__1231361208_5152

Winter has reared its head once more with a snow storm here in New York. If we’re getting snow, we know other parts of the country are also suffering from last minute winter woes.

With heavy snow it’s a good idea to keep outdoor pets indoors – no one wants their pet disappearing in a pile of snow.

Walks? When the snow is thick on the ground and steadily piling up, even the most snow-loving dog isn’t going to do well. So use your noggin (that’s your head) and get some puppy pads or the special fake grass called PottyPatch for your dog to use as an alternative to outdoors.

Exercise woes for your pet are no fun, but be creative. If you live in an apartment building, why not strap on the leash and take your dog for a walk through the halls, or even better up and down a few flights of stairs (we suggest doing this after he’s gone to the bathroom, just in case). Playing games with your dog in the house or apartment work, too.

And in cold weather, cats love to sleep on top of motors, under the hood of cars, so please, before you drive off into the day (or the night as the case may be), we suggest checking under the hood for any sleeping kitties.

So keep warm, keep your pets warm and dry and if you live in a warm state, can we come visit?

Quick winter cat care tip

Since we’re on a roll with kitties (check out our Jay Leno piece below), we’d thought we’d help  you and your kitty get through the chilly remainder of  winter.

It’s great if you have your own home and can control the heat all day long, but many of us live in apartments where the heat is unfortunately controlled by landlords who often have the heat off during daytime hours. You’re at work all day long, but your kitty isn’t. She’s sitting at home, trying to stay warm.

You know how your cat loves to sun herself in the window, or curl up in your lap when it’s cold?  We most definitely don’t ever recommend leaving a space heater on during the day – way too dangerous, but we do recommend this: get your cat a cat bed, even a blanket. Your kitty will love the soft warmth of the bed and be able to burrow under the blanket if she’s too cold.

And that’s it. Pretty simple, isn’t it?

At night, the best thing in the world is to snuggle up with your cat. Don’t you love winter nights?

winter bathing tips

With the cold weather completely upon us, one task remains unchanged: we still need to bathe our pets from time to time.

However winter does bring with it its own issues, and we need to take that into account when not only selecting the right shampoo and conditioner, but how we set about not only washing our dogs, but drying them, too.

Firstly, we recommend a high quality shampoo and conditioner, made specifically for dogs. Choose an organic luxury  shampoo and conditioner for your dog, one that preferably contains ingredients like coconut oil, borage oil or shea butter. The winter weather is harsh and very drying on all our skin, human and pet alike.

Secondly, make sure the house is warm when you bathe your pet. If you live in one of those city apartments where the heat comes on twice daily, do it when the place is warm, not resembling the Arctic tundra. And make sure your dog is completely dry before you expose him to the elements or even the cold. When wet your pet is essentially without his protective fur layer.

And thirdly, always, always reward your pet for being so good during the grooming.
